Women in Wakeboarding

Wakeboarding has been considered by many to be a male dominated sport, but the number of top Canadian female wakeboarding athletes is growing, seemingly by the day. As wakeboarding becomes one of the Canada's fastest growing water sports, women's wakeboarding specifically has been improving with leaps and bounds as more athletes join the sport and the general public takes notice. Starting in the summer of 2008, female wakeboarders will finally have an event all to themselves, aptly named the Queen of Wake series. This 9-event trip will feature the world's best female wakeboarders as they travel along with the King of Wake series (the pro men's tour). On top of the significant cash prize that is provided to the winner of the series, there is also a money prize given to the 'Rookie of the Year', which to many is another good means of encouragement for new participants to be involved. Events such as the Queen of Wake tour encourage more young women to take up the sport and further the skill and competition that already exists. Many of the athletes that are taking part in this event are talking about how it fills them with pride to finally be taken seriously on a stage as big as this.

Equipment manufacturers have also seen the growth in the female participation and have started creating products that are tailor made for these elite female athletes, as well as the average recreational participant. Many of the sponsored riders are helping companies design boards and bindings that help with their specific riding styles and abilities.
