In the past, Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada has been very fortunate to receive
government funding, but now we need to face some key facts:
1. Government funding is not likely to keep pace with the growth of our sport or the
increasing demands for the activities that will keep our sport alive and growing for
generations to come. In fact, there are many indications funding will decrease.
|
 |
2. The Olympic movement, notably the winter games in Vancouver in just a few years
will surely capture a healthy share of attention and revenue. As participants in sport,
we share the enthusiasm but understand that the media spotlight, resource demands and
the global interest is going to have an impact on our ability to capture the same
share of funding we have enjoyed in the past.
3. Sponsorship support for our sport is lacking. We do not have the visibility or broad
spectator base to attract mainstream sponsors. As a result, we cannot rely on sponsorship
to help build our future.
What needs to be done?
 |
With an annual budget approaching $1 million, WSWC and its members need to shift their
focus to increasing revenue sources. One of these is charitable giving from corporations
and individuals - utilizing the tax deductible benefit a donation provides.
This is a major driver behind WSWC's hosting of the 2009 World Water Ski Championships
in partnership with Water Ski and Wakeboard Alberta, Predator Bay Water Ski Club, Kastyn
Stone Lakes and others. This is the highest profile event around which our entire
community can rally to increase visibility of our sport and showcase Canada's ability
to host an event that will be a world-class success, and leave a financial legacy for
the benefit of the sport! The Worlds event will also facilitate a drive to increase
charitable giving from the corporate world and individuals.

What can I do to help?
|
There are many avenues currently in place to help the fundraising campaigns of Water
Ski and Wakeboard Canada and the 2009 World Water Ski Championship Festival. There
are also many events and activities planned to support the 2009 Worlds, in cooperation
with Provincial Associations and local clubs and schools.
