Canadians 1-2 at World University Water Skiing Championships
January 16, 2012
LOS MORROS, Chile-Alex Paradis of Quebec City and Kevin Melnuk of Toronto earned gold and silver respectively this past weekend at the World University Water Skiing Championships.
Paradis won the men's jump final with a leap of 63.1 metres while Melnuk won a three-way battle for silver soaring 60.9 just ahead of third place finisher Felipe Miranda of Chile at 60.6
"I haven't jumped this well in over a year," said Paradis, currently completing his Masters in business administration at the University of Southern Florida in Lakeland. "Going into the final knew I was well prepared and I knew it was going to take a big jump to get the win."
Melnuk just missed reaching the podium for his overall result placing fourth with 2,510.75 points. He was 16 points short of third place. He was also sixth in tricks and ninth in slalom. After suffering a serious knee injury in a jump crash in 2010, Melnuk was pleased to get on the podium.
"It was hard to get the confidence back after the accident," said Melnuk, who is completing his Masters in business administration at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. "I've always been a cautious jumper anyway but this weekend I really had to get out of my comfort zone to contend for a medal."
Paradis was also ninth in tricks and 13th in slalom for sixth overall.
They were the only two Canadians at the competition.

McClintock siblings among Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada's 2011 award winners
November 21, 2011
OTTAWA-Whitney McClintock and her brother Jason McClintock of Cambridge, Ont., were named the male and female athletes of the year in water skiing while Rusty Malinoski of Humboldt, Sask., and Ashley Leugner of Regina received the same awards in wakeboarding as Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada announced its 2011 award winners.
Whitney McClintock successfully defended her overall slalom world title this past summer.
"Being a world champion is what I always strive for," said McClintock. "What makes this one special is I messed up a couple of events at the worlds but I was still able to come back strong in slalom. I had such a great season leading into the worlds that I had the confidence."
Jason McClintock swept all four gold at the Canadian championships and added a couple of silver at the recent Pan American Games.
"It was a steady season but I'm not 100 percent satisfied," he said. "It's been a gradual climb the last two seasons and this year I worked hard on fitness and strength and that allowed me to not fade by the end of the season."
Malinoski earned six top-five finishes on the pro circuit and was fourth at the world championships. Leugner came back from a concussion to win gold in the amateur and open women's events at the Canadian championships.
"I had another solid and consistent year," said Malinoski. "Still, I expect more from myself and I'm already excited about next season."
"It was a tough season with the injury but it was great to have a strong performance at nationals," said Leugner. "I'm looking forward to having a full season without health issues next year."
Neilly Ross of Belleville, Ont., and Christian Primrose of Barrie, Ont., were named the junior water skier and wakeboarder of the year respectively.
Others honorees were Paul MacDonald of Milton, Ont., named the barefoot water skier of the year, Jennifer Cloutier of Ottawa adaptive athlete of the year, Erika Langman of Orangeville, Ont., volunteer of the year, Jay Poole coach of the year and Michele Grant official of the year.
MacDonald broke a Canadian record this summer en route to four gold medals at the Canadian championships. Cloutier earned a bronze in tricks at the disabled world championships, won two gold at nationals and set a Canadian record in tricks.
Water Ski and Wakeboard Manitoba was named province of the year.

Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada announces five inductees into its Hall of Fame
August 23, 2011
OTTAWA - Ken Nelson of Leduc, Alberta, Hélène Grégoire of Gatineau, Que. , Andy Murdison of Haliburton, Ont., Jeff McClintock of Cambridge, Ont., and Mike McComb of Delta, B.C., are the 2011 inductees into Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada's Hall of Fame.
Grégoire and Murdison were inducted as athletes, McClintock and McComb as builders and Nelson as a pioneer.
Grégoire was a member of the National Water Ski Team from 1970 to 1977. Along with 10 national titles, she held Canadian records in jump, tricks and slalom. She won bronze in jump at the 1972 Pan Am Championships and posted six top-10 finishes at the world championships.
''Being inducted into Hall of Fame is definitely the crowning moment in my athletic career,'' said Grégoire, a dentist based in Gatineau, Que. ''It's amazing to see how the sport has evolved over the years. For me that was the most important thing. We always continued to learn one from another.''
Murdison was one of Canada's top international water skiers in the 1960's posting top-10 finishes consistently at the Pan Am championships and world championships. He holds a Canadian slalom record that will never be surpassed. It was set while skiing at 38 mph. In a 1966 rule change, the top speed was reduced to 36 mph and the slalom course shortened.
''There are a lot of great memories from my career but what I always say is that when you compete at a high level it always teaches you about life,'' said Murdison, a retired sporting goods store owner.
McClintock competed for 30 years earning numerous national titles and was also a successful national team coach. He was also recognized for his boat driving and judging skills as well as a successful site and course certification expert.
''The best memories for me as a competitor were the 1979 worlds and winning a Pan Am title,'' said McClintock, who runs a water skiing school in Cambridge, Ont. ''Moving to the technical side of the sport was a natural for me because I had always been working on those skills during my competitive career.''
McComb was one of the trailblazers in the wakeboarding. He purchased his first wakeboard in 1990 at age 24 and since then has been a key player in building the sport in Canada and around the world. In 2004, he became Vice President of the World Wakeboard Association and the head of rules, regulations and officials.
''I'm not surprised to see wakeboard grow so quickly,'' said McComb. ''It's just one of those cool sports. But I've been really amazed at how fast the degree of difficulty of the tricks the competitors execute today have evolved. It's been amazing.''
Nelson founded and built Shalom Park in Edmonton, Canada's first man-made specific water sport facility and the most prolific host site in Canadian towed water sports history. He also launched competitions for youth and recreational skiers and developed technical innovations for the sport such as the use of cylinders as boat guides in a slalom course.
''What I enjoy the most in the sport is working with the kids,'' said Nelson. ''We run a program annually and we have taught over 2,000 kids over the years. The development of Shalom Park has also been a source of pride. Many pro skiers consider it among the top-10 venues in the world.''
With over 24,000 registered members, Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada is the recognized national sports organization for towed water sports. Canada's record of success on the world stage is nothing short of impressive: 48 world champions, 124 total medals in world championships, and 27 Pan Am Games medals since 1995.

Jed Leech-young and vibrant recipient of the Manoo and Jean Gurjar Bursary
Jul 13, 2011
Jed Leech has been selected as the recipient of a $1000 Manoo and Jean Gurjar Bursary. Jed (14) is high school student at Kelsey High School in Mill Bay, British Columbia.
The goal of the Legacy Fund is to provide annual financial support to the skiing and educational pursuits of 1 to 2 Canadian water skiers who best represent the ideals established in honour of Manoo Gurjar. The qualities Manoo was looking for are a love and passion for the sport, sociability and friendliness within the water ski community, gives back to the sport in his or her own unique way, demonstrates a commitment to education and to training and becoming a better athlete, competes in sanctioned level competitions and lastly, demonstrates potential and drive to compete at a national championship or higher level.
Jed exemplifies all of these qualities. "I have loved water skiing from a very young age. The reasons I love such a unique sport are the feelings you get when you pull off that amazing jump you have been waiting years for, that trick that you have dreamed of landing, and that perfect pass through the slalom course which makes you throw your fist in the air." expressed Jed on his application. Jed loves to help out in any way he can, whether it be on the water, on the dock or taking extra courses to become a better coach.
With big dreams in sight, Jed would love to get a scholarship down south to study either dentistry or optometry while still being able to ski. He will be competing in the Canadian Water Ski Championships this year and hopes to make it to the Worlds Water Ski Championships in the long run. Jed was pleased to hear the news about the bursary. "This is awesome", said an excited Leech. "What a great honour. This will let me get some extra gear and lessons from some pro coaches."
Jed will be publicly presented with the Bursary at the Water Ski Championships in Summerski, ON.
We would like to congratulate Jed and wish him luck at the Water Ski Championships in August as well as in the future!
Quebec's Yann Thibault wins two gold at inaugural Canadian Cable Park Nationals
Jul 10, 2011
WINNIPEG -Yann Thibault of Pointe-Calumet, Que., won two gold medals on Sunday at the inaugural Canadian Cable Park Nationals cable wakeboarding competition which was held at Adrenaline Adventures in the Manitoba capital.
Cable wakeboarding was one of eight sports announced by the International Olympic Committee to be considered for the 2020 Games last week.
In cable wakeboarding instead of a motorboat towing wakeboarders, the facility uses towers and overhead cables to allow wakeboarders to go a maximum of 30 kilometres per hour. There are jumps in the lake so the wakeboarders can take to the air to perform their moves.
There are two such parks in Canada and 215 around the world in 39 countries.
Thibault, 23, won the obstacle only event with Jess Polley of Winnipeg second and Justin Bonney of Ottawa third. Thibault was also first in the pro men wakeboard with Rob Corrum of the U.S., second and Mickey Henry of Ontario third.
"It went super well, I didn't fall all day" said Thibault, who started wakeboarding at age 13. "I’ve had a tough start to the season so this really gives me a lot of confidence. We have a busy schedule ahead this summer and I needed this kind of performance."
In the wakeskate pro division, Tanner Champion of Port Alberni, B.C., was the winner with James Balzer of B.C., second and Dylan Elliott of Ontario third.
Event sponsors were Yamaha, Dragon, Byerly, Accurate, Billabong, Liquid Force, Nautique and Ronix.

Meanwhile in Grand Rapids, Michigan, reigning overall world champion Whitney McClintock of Cambridge, Ont., won the gold medal in women’s slalom at the Global Invitational water ski championships.

Cable Wakeboard in Top 8 Sports being Considered for 2020 Summer Olympic Games
Jul 8, 2011
With files from Reuters News
Eight sports, including cable wakeboard, will battle it out for a spot in the 2020 Olympics, the International Olympic Committee said on Monday.
Baseball and softball, the two sports removed after the 2008 Games, as well as wakeboard, squash, sport climbing, rollersports, karate and the martial art of wushu, will be evaluated and possibly reduced further in early 2013, IOC President Jacques Rogge told reporters. "Twelve sports were considered, eight were retained," Rogge said. Surfing, dancing, bowling and netball missed out. Rogge said a final list would be put to the vote in late 2013 at the IOC session in Buenos Aires for one spot.
Rogge also said the IOC had decided to include men's and women's ski slopestyle and snowboard parallel special slalom in the Sochi 2014 winter Games programme.
"Such events provide great entertainment for the spectators and add further youthful appeal," he said.
The IOC in April introduced six new events for Sochi, including women's ski jumping, team events for figure skating and luge, ski halfpipe for men and women and biathlon mixed relay.
"This is very exciting news for wakeboarding", said Dan Wolfenden, Executive Director, Water Ski and Wakeboard Canada. "While there remains much to be done to best represent cable wakeboarding in the two years leading up to the vote as to which of the 8 finalist sports will be added to the Olympic programme, it is very encouraging that the discipline of cable wakeboarding is being seriously discussed within the highest echelons of the IOC. With Canada's second cablepark opening last week, 4 straightline cable systems, and the inaugural Canadian Cablepark Nationals being held on July 10 in Winnipeg at Adrenaline Adventures, Canada is on a path for a boom in cable wakeboarding."
According to the International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation, there are over 215 cable facilities globally, spanning across 39 different countries. Germany alone has 58 cable facilities. A cable facility offers boatless participation on a body of water. A cable, as attached to series of towers around the small lake, powered by an electric motor, can tow 6 to 8 people at the one time. For wakeboarding, obstacles, such as rails, A-frames, kickers, flatbars and such, are added in the course to provide for challenging and athletic riding. The reduced cost makes the sport very appealing and accessible.
Canadians wins three medals at U.S., Master water ski and wakeboard championships
Mar 29, 2011
CALLAWAY GARDENS, Georgia–Whitney McClintock of Cambridge, Ont., took gold, Ryan Dodd of Olds, Alta., silver and Rusty Malinoski of Humboldt, Sask., bronze on Sunday at the 52nd U.S. Masters water ski and wakeboard championships.
In women's tricks, McClintock scored 7,750 points for the gold. Natallia Berdnikava of Belarus was second at 7,410 and Iris Cambray of France third at 4,700.
"I was able to put the pressure on the girls with my run," said McClintock, who'll defend her world overall title later this summer. "I wasn’t very strong with my toe pass so I knew I had to do my hand pass perfectly."
In men's jump, world record holder Freddy Krueger of the U.S., was the winner soaring 69.8 metres. Dodd followed at 67.4 and Damien Sharman of Britain was third at 64.8. Jaret Llewellyn of Innisfail, Alta., was fourth at 64.0.
"I jumped decent," said Dodd, 26, the Moomba Masters champion in Australia this past March. "The approach and take-off were perfect but my timing was off. Last year at this time I would have been really happy with this but this year I want better. The big difference for me this year is I've able to train at home and really focus on the things I need to improve."
The 40-year-old Llewellyn, a nine-time world champion, missed all of last season with a knee injury. He has a strong performance in Saturday’s prelims, however in Sunday’s jump final he tweaked the injured knee on his second of three attempts and did not execute his third jump.
"He took precautionary measures," said Canadian national team coach Steve Bush. "Everyone felt so bad because he was making such a strong comeback here. He’ll need to undergo some tests this week to see if there’s been any damage to the knee."
Earlier Sunday, Llewellyn was fourth in tricks missing the podium by only 60 points.
In men's wakeboard, Malinoski took third spot to rebound from not making the finals last week at the season opening on the wakeboard Pro Tour circuit.
"It was great to get back on the podium," he said. "Consistency is what I'm looking for."
